Finding a therapist can feel overwhelming, but the process becomes easier when you know what to look for. Here are some tips to help you find a therapist who’s the right fit for your needs, values, and goals:

1. Get Clear on What You’re Looking For

Think about what’s bringing you to therapy. Is it anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, identity exploration, burnout, or something else? You don’t need to have all the answers, but identifying your general concerns can help you find someone with relevant expertise.

2. Look for the Right Therapeutic Approach

There are many types of therapy—Internal Family Systems (IFS), CBT, EMDR, Somatic, trauma-informed, etc. While you don’t need to be an expert in the methods, it helps to know if a therapist is skilled in approaches that align with your needs.

3. Trust the Initial Conversation

At Fehr Counselling, we offer a free consultation. Use this time to ask questions and get a feel for the therapist's style. Pay attention to how you feel—do you feel rushed, judged, or dismissed? Or do you feel heard, respected, and at ease?

4. Don’t Be Afraid to “Shop Around”

It’s okay to talk to a few therapists before deciding. Fit matters. You’re not being “difficult”—you’re being thoughtful about who you trust with your mental health.Therapy is about connection. The right therapist won’t make you feel fixed or judged—they’ll help you feel supported, curious, and empowered. If something feels off, it’s okay to keep looking.

5. Know That the First Few Sessions Are a Test Run

Even after you begin, it’s normal to reassess. Therapy is a relationship, and it’s okay to decide that it’s not the right fit. A good therapist will support you in finding someone else if needed.

Finding the right therapist is not about finding a “perfect” person—it’s about finding someone who makes you feel safe, seen, and supported. Take your time. You deserve that kind of care.
